An Air India Cabin Crew Fired for Attempting to Smuggle Gold Bars From London

An Air India cabin crew was fired for attempting to smuggle two gold bars to India on a flight from London just a day after the crew was caught.


The cabin crew was attempting to smuggle the gold bars on flight AI162 from London, the UK to New Delhi, India on 8th June 2021


Custom officials in London Heathrow Airport caught the cabin crew and reported the infraction to the airline.


Air India issued a termination letter just a day after on 9th June 2021 as according to the employment contract the airline can terminate an employee without further notice if caught engaged in smuggling or illicit trading of any kind.

In the last 5 years, 11,000 kilograms of gold worth $427 million has been seized at airports across India.
