Airbus to convert A380 production line to build A320 family aircraft

As the Airbus A380 programming is nearing its end; Airbus will be converting the A380 production line at the Toulouse facility to produce the A320 family aircraft.

The production line will be installed at the Lagardère plant in Toulouse and it’ll be operational by the end of 2022.

Airbus initially planned to open the production line earlier however the manufacturer delayed the opening due to the ongoing pandemic. Production of aircraft was cut by 40% due to cancellations.

“Now, with market recovery insight and a potential return to pre-COVID production rates for single-aisle aircraft between 2023 and 2025, Airbus is resuming its activities for the project.” - Airbus

The A380 production line was first opened in 2004 with the first A380 taking off in 2005. Airbus initially expected to receive over 600 orders for the A380 however as of today, only 246 A380s were build.

Airbus is expecting to return pre-COVID levels by 2025. The A320 is the most ordered commercial aircraft in the world.
