Lufthansa to operate a special 15 hour flight on the Airbus A350-900

Lufthansa is planning to operate their longest nonstop flight ever from Hamburg to Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands. The journey of 13,700 km will be flown on the Airbus A350-900 and would take over 15 hours.

The flight is scheduled for the 1st of February. It is a special charter by Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. There will be 92 passengers on board which includes scientists and ship crew that are getting ready for the upcoming expedition with the Polarstern research vessel.

The preparation plans for the flight began in the summer of 2020. The special charter was required as the usual route for the expedition crew via Cape Town was not feasible due to the infection situation in South Africa.

After the flight to the Falkland Islands, the scientific and ship crew members will continue their journey to Antarctica on the research vessel Polarstern.
