Etihad Airways Strengthens African Reach with Three Partnership Deals in July

Etihad Airways has accelerated its African growth strategy with three partnership agreements signed across the continent in July, creating a network of immediate onward connections ahead of the airline’s new African routes launching later this year.

The month began in Southern Africa, where Etihad concluded an interline agreement with Fastjet Zimbabwe. Fastjet’s regional reach will support Etihad’s upcoming flights to Harare, giving guests access to additional destinations across Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries.

In West Africa, Etihad signed an interline agreement with Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest carrier, during a ceremony in Lagos on 22 July. The partnership opens up 20 destinations across Nigeria, West Africa and Central Africa, allowing Etihad guests to connect seamlessly across the region.

Two days later in Accra, Etihad formalised a Memorandum of Understanding with Africa World Airlines. The agreement sets out cooperation across codeshare, interline, cargo and loyalty, creating a deeper framework for long‑term collaboration with the Ghana‑based airline.

These July agreements build on Etihad’s existing strategic joint venture with Ethiopian Airlines and extend the carrier’s reach far beyond the destinations it will serve with its own aircraft. They also follow a deliberate sequence: in April, Etihad announced six new African destinations, positioning Abu Dhabi as a corridor linking Africa with India and Asia at a time when cargo and trade‑linked travel demand continues to rise.

The timing aligns with the UAE’s broader engagement with Africa, including the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement signed with Nigeria in January 2026. When Etihad’s new African routes begin, the partner network behind them will already be in place, enabling guests to connect onward across West and Southern Africa from the first day of operations.

Arik De, Etihad Airways Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer, said Africa is one of the fastest‑growing aviation regions and the airline is moving quickly to grow with it. He noted the distinct strengths of each partnership: the reach of Fastjet in Southern Africa, the breadth of Air Peace’s network and the depth of cooperation with Africa World Airlines.
