MACL Launches First ATC Radar Control Course In Maldives

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) launched its first Air Traffic Control (ATC) Radar Control Training, Area Control Surveillance Course (ICAO 054) on 30th July 2023.

This 8-week training program aims to enhance the skills of air traffic control professionals and improve the company’s air navigation services.

Under the supervision of lead instructor Richard Thomas Smith from Global ATS / UK, and MACL’s instructors Mohmed Athuhar and Ahmed Nazeer, six participants began the training, which will conclude on September 21, 2023.

As MACL is responsible for providing air navigation services to all airports in the Maldives, MACL places great emphasis on advancing the expertise of its air traffic control personnel. The ATC Radar Control Training is a testament to MACL’s dedication to providing world-class training and services to its customers and stakeholders.

This initiative builds on MACL’s previous achievements in enhancing its air traffic control capabilities. In 2021, MACL unveiled the Maldives’ first Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower simulator at Velana International Airport (VIA), an essential tool for training air traffic control officers. This simulator plays a significant role in the ongoing development and improvement of air traffic controllers’ skills.

Furthermore, in 2023, MACL made a remarkable move by launching two Air Traffic Control License Courses, simultaneously conducting the Area Control Procedural Course (ICAO 055) and the Approach Control Procedural Course (ICAO 053).
