MATCA Warns Staffing Shortages Are Compromising Aviation Safety

The Maldives Air Traffic Controllers Association (MATCA) has issued an urgent warning over growing workforce shortages, stating that staffing gaps and fatigue are increasingly compromising aviation safety.

Air traffic controllers operate in a high-pressure, safety-critical environment where precision, alertness, and timely decision-making are essential at all times. However, MATCA warns that these standards are being systematically challenged by chronic understaffing and unsustainable working conditions.

Local airports are currently experiencing insufficient staffing levels among air traffic controllers, resulting in extended working hours and reduced flexibility in shift planning. Controllers are frequently required to manage high traffic volumes with limited personnel, significantly increasing workload intensity and complexity.

Due to current duty rosters, many controllers are working compressed schedules and irregular shifts, contributing to physical and mental fatigue, a well-documented hazard in aviation operations with the potential to affect concentration, situational awareness, and communication accuracy.

MATCA is calling for urgent action, including recruitment and retention measures, implementation of Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS), a review of duty rosters, and greater engagement with frontline controllers in decision-making processes.

The association's concerns come in the wake of a tragic incident at LaGuardia Airport, where a ground collision involving an aircraft and an emergency vehicle resulted in loss of life. MATCA extended its sincere condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected, standing in solidarity with the global aviation community.

While the LaGuardia incident remains under investigation, MATCA noted that it serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with staffing shortages, fatigue, and operational strain, issues that are not isolated but resonate across the aviation industry worldwide.

Despite these challenges, air traffic controllers remain unwavering in their commitment to maintaining the highest levels of safety. MATCA emphasizes, however, that safety must be supported by adequate staffing, sustainable working conditions, and institutional accountability.
