Japan has positioned a Japan Air Self-Defense Force aircraft in the Maldives as part of precautionary measures to support the potential evacuation of Japanese nationals and others, following a request from the Minister for Foreign Affairs for preparatory action.

According to the Ministry of Defense, orders were issued to mobilise the necessary unit, which has since been carrying out coordination and logistical preparations for overseas deployment. As part of these actions, a KC‑767 aerial refuelling and transport aircraft departed Komaki Base in the early hours of March 8 and arrived safely in the Maldives later the same day.
The aircraft is now on standby in the Maldives, maintaining a posture that allows for rapid response should transportation by the Self‑Defense Forces become necessary. Officials emphasise that this readiness is precautionary, ensuring Japan can act swiftly if the situation requires.
The government notes that safeguarding Japanese nationals overseas remains one of its highest responsibilities. The Ministry of Defense and the Self‑Defense Forces will continue close coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other relevant agencies, and partner countries. They also state that they are closely monitoring developments to ensure every possible measure is taken to protect the safety of Japanese citizens abroad.
