Two Indian nationals have been arrested at Velana International Airport after authorities discovered 6.7 kilograms of hashish oil concealed inside their luggage.

The seized narcotics carry an estimated street value of MVR 5.4 million, making it one of the more significant drug interceptions at the airport this year.

Customs and police officials detected the package of hashish oil during routine screening of the passengers’ luggage. The two suspects, aged 21 and 19, were immediately taken into custody following the discovery. Laboratory analysis later confirmed the substance as hashish oil.

Both individuals were presented before the Criminal Court, where a remand hearing was held. The court ordered the pair to be held in custody for six days while the investigation continues. During the hearing, both suspects informed the court that they wished to appoint legal counsel to represent them.

The arrests come amid a series of drug‑related interceptions at Velana International Airport, where authorities have increased surveillance and screening measures in response to rising trafficking attempts. In the same week, other unrelated drug arrests were also reported, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb narcotics smuggling into the Maldives.
