Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) has received its 66th De Havilland Canada DHC‑6 Twin Otter, further cementing its position as the world’s largest seaplane operator. The latest addition marks another milestone in the airline’s three decade journey as the backbone of Maldivian tourism and the undisputed leader in global seaplane operations.

The arrival of the 66th Twin Otter reinforces TMA’s unmatched operational scale. The new aircraft will enter service after standard float‑equipping and interior configuration, ready to support the growing demand for resort transfers across the Maldives.

The De Havilland DHC6 Twin Otter

The De Havilland Twin Otter is renowned worldwide for its rugged reliability, short take‑off and landing capability, and ability to operate in challenging environments. Its versatility performing equally well on wheels, skis, or floats has made it a favourite in remote regions from the Arctic to the tropics.

In the Maldives, the aircraft’s float‑equipped configuration allows it to land directly at resort lagoons, offering travellers a seamless and scenic transfer experience. Its durability and performance in hot, humid, and salt‑rich environments have made it the backbone of TMA’s operations for decades.

The World’s Largest Seaplane Operator - And Still Growing

TMA’s scale is unmatched. With 66 Twin Otters, the airline operates the largest seaplane fleet in the world far exceeding any other commercial seaplane operator. Its operations run from sunrise to sunset, with dozens of aircraft simultaneously departing from Velana International Airport’s dedicated seaplane terminal.

The airline’s consistency, safety record, and operational expertise have earned it global recognition. For many travellers, the seaplane journey is not just a transfer, it is an iconic part of the Maldivian holiday experience.

Looking Ahead

As tourism demand grows across the Maldives, TMA continues to expand its operational capacity. The arrival of the 66th Twin Otter aligns with the airline’s ongoing fleet development and its role in maintaining extensive seaplane connectivity across the country.
