A newly converted De Havilland Canada DHC‑6‑300 Twin Otter has arrived in Addu City, marking the official start of Maldivian’s wheel‑based operations across the southern atolls. The aircraft, previously configured as a floatplane for seaplane transfers, has been refitted with landing gear to operate scheduled domestic flights linking Gan, Fuvahmulah, Kaadedhdhoo, and Kooddoo.

The enhanced connectivity anticipated to support regional tourism, giving travellers easier access to guesthouses, dive centres, and resorts across the south, an area known for its rich marine biodiversity and growing tourism potential.

Maldivian has confirmed the following local fares for the new inter‑island routes:

  • Gan – Fuvahmulah: MVR 500

  • Fuvahmulah – Kaadedhdhoo: MVR 650

  • Fuvahmulah – Kooddoo: MVR 650

  • Gan – Kaadedhdhoo: MVR 900

  • Gan – Kooddoo: MVR 900

The DHC‑6‑300 Twin Otter is widely regarded for its short‑takeoff‑and‑landing (STOL) performance, reliability, and ability to operate from compact regional runways. Its quick‑turnaround capability and suitability for brief inter‑island sectors make it an ideal choice for southern operations.

While the Twin Otter is a familiar sight in the Maldives, it is most commonly seen in its floatplane configuration, serving as the backbone of the country’s seaplane transfer network. Operators rely on the aircraft to transport tourists between Malé and resort islands, taking advantage of its ability to land on lagoons and operate multiple short flights per day.

The arrival of the aircraft in Addu signals a meaningful step toward strengthening southern connectivity. With more direct links, reduced travel times, and accessible fares, the service is poised to benefit both residents and visitors as operations begin.
