Maldivian has launched its first-ever direct Addu–Jeddah service, a historic operation that positions Gan International Airport as a new southern gateway for Umrah travel. The widebody Airbus A330 departed Gan at 04:24 am, carrying 259 pilgrims, including 110 travellers from Addu City who were able to begin their pilgrimage without transiting through Malé.

The charter was organised in partnership with The Traveler and Addu-based group Dhathuruveriya, forming part of the newly branded Addu–Mecca initiative aimed at expanding religious travel options for southern communities.
The flight marks a significant step in Maldivian’s growing long-haul operations. With the introduction of its A330 fleet, the airline has strengthened its presence in the Umrah and Hajj market, operating more than two dozen flights and transporting over 6,000 pilgrims in recent months.
Officials and organisers described the inaugural Addu–Jeddah flight as a “historic moment” for Addu City, noting that direct connectivity will reduce travel time, ease logistical challenges, and enhance Gan’s role as an emerging international hub.
The successful operation is expected to pave the way for additional charter and scheduled services from the south, offering Addu residents more convenient access to key international destinations.
