Maldivian operated the first seaplane flight from Male’ to Noonu Velidhoo today, marking the island's first direct air link to the capital and a significant step in improving regional connectivity.

The inaugural flight departed Velidhoo this afternoon with 15 passengers on board with the flight departing at 2:40PM, formally opening the new route. A brief ceremony was held in Velidhoo to mark the occasion, attended by Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Captain Mohamed Ameen, senior officials from Island Aviation Services Limited, and members of the Velidhoo Island Council.

A seaplane platform has been constructed near the harbor to support the new service, and a temporary check‑in and waiting area has been established inside the Island Council Office. The launch fulfills a commitment made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Velidhoo in July last year, when he pledged that seaplane flights would begin ahead of the development of the planned airport in Vihafaru.

Maldivian has scheduled twice‑weekly flights on the route, operating every Wednesday and Friday. Promotional fares have been introduced, with tickets priced at MVR 999 for Maldivian citizens and between USD 65 and 93 for tourists, depending on fare class. The airline has indicated that the schedule may be adjusted based on demand.

The new flights are expected to significantly reduce travel time between Velidhoo and Male’, replacing long and weather‑dependent sea journeys. Faster access to the capital is anticipated to benefit residents seeking medical care, education, and government services, while also supporting guesthouse operators, tourism businesses, and local supply chains.

The introduction of seaplane flights forms part of a broader national effort to expand inter‑atoll connectivity and strengthen economic links across the Maldives.
