Velana International Airport (VIA) is experiencing one of its busiest days of the year today, with more than 27,000 passengers expected to travel through the airport before the day concludes.

According to current operational data, the international terminal will see 22,142 passengers throughout the day. This includes 11,035 departing passengers and 11,107 arriving passengers, reflecting strong two‑way travel demand during the festive period.

The domestic terminal is also recording significant movement, with 4,843 passengers expected to travel today. Of these, 2,652 are departing from Male’, while 2,191 are arriving into the capital.

Across both terminals, VIA is scheduled to record 239 aircraft movements by the end of the day, underscoring the airport’s heightened operational tempo during the peak holiday season.

Airport officials note that the surge aligns with the year‑end travel rush, driven by tourists heading to resorts and increased local travel. They added that the airport has implemented a series of measures to smoothen operations, and despite the exceptionally high traffic, both terminals continue to function efficiently.

With the festive season still underway, VIA is expected to maintain strong passenger volumes in the days ahead as the Maldives remains one of the region’s most sought‑after holiday destinations.
