Maafaru International Airport has announced a sharp increase in private jet activity as the Maldives enters its peak tourist season, with movements steadily rising and around 200 private jet movements expected in the coming days. Based on current trends, airport officials project that total movements for the season could approach 800, marking one of the busiest periods since the airport began operations.

Private jet arrivals have been ongoing since the 20th of this month, and early‑season traffic is already showing strong momentum. According to Mumthaz Ali, General Manager of Maafaru International Airport, around 15 jets are currently parked, with a further increase anticipated over the next several days.
This year’s anticipated growth is strongly supported by the recent expansion of Maafaru’s aircraft parking apron, which doubled the airport’s parking capacity. The additional space has made Maafaru a preferred gateway for high‑net‑worth travelers heading to luxury resorts in Raa Atoll and Baa Atoll, many of whom previously landed at Velana International Airport (VIA).
Last year, Maafaru Airport recorded 579 private jet movements. With the expanded apron now operational, airport officials expect a notable rise in total movements this season.
Private jet traffic in the Maldives typically peaks between October and April, driven by the festive season, New Year holidays, and the influx of affluent tourists. While a considerable number of jets are also parked at Velana International Airport, industry sources note that VIA’s current figures are slightly lower than in previous years.
With strengthened infrastructure and rising demand from luxury travelers, Maafaru International Airport is preparing for one of its busiest peak seasons to date.
