Emirates Beings Operations from Velana International Airport’s New Terminal 1

Emirates officially launched its operations from the newly opened Terminal 1 at Velana International Airport (VIA) today, following a ceremonial ribbon‑cutting that marked the opening of the airline’s dedicated check‑in counters.

Terminal 1, inaugurated as part of VIA’s multi‑year expansion programme, is designed to significantly enhance passenger capacity and streamline airport operations. The new facility features modern check‑in areas, advanced baggage handling systems, and expanded passenger amenities, offering a more seamless travel experience for both outbound and inbound travellers.

Emirates, one of the Maldives’ largest international carriers by passenger volume, connects Male’ with Dubai and onward to a global network spanning Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas.

The opening of Terminal 1 marks a significant step in VIA’s phased transition plan, which aims to shift all international airline operations to the new terminal over time. The facility is part of a broader modernization effort that includes expanded capacity, aerobridges, and upgraded passenger processing systems, designed to accommodate the Maldives’ growing tourism demand.
