An Air India Express pilot has been suspended after a passenger at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport alleged he was verbally abused and physically assaulted during a security‑lane dispute on Friday. The airline confirmed on Saturday that the pilot, identified as Captain Virender Sejwal, has been removed from duty pending a full investigation.

The incident occurred at Terminal 1, where passenger Ankit Dewan travelling with his wife, seven‑year‑old daughter, and a four‑month‑old baby was preparing to board a SpiceJet flight. Dewan said airport staff directed his family to use the security lane typically reserved for airline employees and passengers with reduced mobility due to the stroller they were carrying.

While in the queue, Dewan alleged that several staff members began cutting ahead. When he objected, he said Captain Sejwal who was off‑duty and travelling as a passenger also attempted to bypass the line. Dewan claimed the pilot responded aggressively, allegedly calling him “anpadh” (uneducated) and questioning his presence in the staff lane.

According to Dewan, the verbal exchange escalated quickly. He alleged that Captain Sejwal physically assaulted him, leaving him bloodied. Dewan later posted photos of his injuries and of the pilot on social media, prompting widespread public attention and official responses from aviation authorities.

Dewan alleged that he was pressured to sign a letter stating he would not pursue the matter further, claiming he was told he might miss his flight and lose significant holiday bookings if he refused. He also raised concerns about airport management and the conduct of security personnel during the altercation.
