SriLankan Airlines has celebrated nine years of operations to Gan International Airport, underscoring its role as the only international carrier providing scheduled flights to the southern Maldives.

The Colombo–Gan route was first launched in 2016, opening direct access between Sri Lanka and Addu Atoll. Since then, the service has carried thousands of passengers, supporting both tourism and local communities in the southern Maldives.

Despite temporary suspensions during the COVID‑19 pandemic, SriLankan Airlines maintained its commitment to Addu, operating charter flights when scheduled services were paused and resuming regular operations as soon as conditions allowed.

The route has boosted Addu’s visibility as a destination, providing direct access for tourists and facilitating cargo transport from Colombo. Resorts and guesthouses in the region have benefited from the steady flow of visitors arriving via Gan.
