India has launched Operation Sagar Bandhu, a comprehensive humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission to support Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah battered the island nation, leaving more than 80 dead and thousands displaced.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) mobilized its transport fleet within hours of the cyclone’s landfall. A C‑130J Super Hercules aircraft delivered 12 tonnes of humanitarian cargo, including tents, tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene kits, and food packets.
An IL‑76 heavy‑lift aircraft followed, carrying two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams comprising 80 trained rescuers and four canines. The teams were equipped with inflatable boats, hydraulic cutters, breaching tools, and medical kits to assist in rescue operations across flood‑hit regions.
Complementing the airlift, the Indian Navy deployed INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri, which docked in Colombo carrying 4.5 tonnes of dry rations and 2 tonnes of fresh supplies. The consignments included staple foods, dairy products, bakery items, and beverages, ensuring immediate relief for communities cut off by flooding and landslides. Naval personnel also assisted in logistics and distribution, reinforcing India’s maritime commitment to regional disaster response.
On the ground, NDRF teams began coordinated rescue missions alongside Sri Lankan authorities. Their deployment brought specialized skills in flood rescue, medical support, and communications. The presence of trained canines enhanced search operations in areas where landslides had buried homes and infrastructure
Indian leaders emphasized that Operation Sagar Bandhu reflects the country’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision MAHASAGAR, which prioritize regional solidarity and maritime cooperation. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to standing by Sri Lanka in times of crisis, while Sri Lankan officials expressed gratitude for the rapid assistance.
