MACL to Develop City Hotel, Eco-Tourism Project, and Sports Complex in Fuvahmulah City

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed two agreements to develop a City Hotel, Eco-Tourism Project, and a Sports Complex in Fuvahmulah City.

The first agreement, signed with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, outlines the development of a City Hotel and Eco-Tourism Project aimed at enhancing Fuvahmulah’s appeal as a southern tourism hub. The signing took place during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to the city and was formalized by Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, CEO & Managing Director of MACL, and Mohamed Nashath Rasheed, Minister of State for Tourism and Environment.

The second agreement, signed with the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, will see the development of a multi-purpose Sports Complex designed to promote youth engagement, athletic training, and recreational activities.

The City Hotel and Eco-Tourism Project awarded to MACL includes the construction of a modern hotel and the creation of eco-tourism infrastructure tailored to Fuvahmulah’s unique natural environment, which features freshwater lakes, wetlands, and rich biodiversity.

These projects are among several major developments launched during the President’s visit, including the construction of a new Islamic Centre and other public service facilities.

MACL’s involvement in these initiatives reflects a notable shift in its institutional role from a traditionally airport focused operator to a broader development partner engaged in tourism, sports, and community infrastructure. While this expansion signals alignment with national priorities, it also marks a departure from MACL’s core mandate, raising questions about long-term capacity and strategic focus.
