Hanimaadhoo’s transformation into a modern international airport is nearly finished, with 91% of the work completed and operations expected to begin by November. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu shared the update during his visit to Haa Dhaalu Atoll, emphasizing the strategic importance of the project for northern Maldives.

Once one of the Maldives’ earliest domestic airports, Hanimaadhoo is now undergoing its most extensive upgrade to date. According to the Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL), key infrastructure is in its final stages: the runway, control tower, cargo terminal, hangar taxiway, and utility systems are 99% complete, while the passenger and jetty terminals are at 92%.

The new terminal spans 10,380 square metres and features traditional Maldivian design elements, including the country’s first aerobridge outside Male. The facility will support Airbus A320s, Boeing 737s, and ATR/Dash8 aircraft, with apron space for nine planes, three jets and six turboprops. Annual passenger capacity is projected at 1.3 million, with domestic services on the lower floor and international operations above.

Valued at USD 129.7 million, the airport is expected to dramatically improve access to the northern atolls, boosting tourism, trade, and regional development. President Muizzu also announced that passengers departing from Hanimaadhoo will be able to purchase US dollars at bank rate, with a dedicated dollar ATM to be installed outside the terminal.

In addition to the airport, the President outlined a broader development agenda for Hanimaadhoo. The island council will begin issuing passports and national ID cards locally, and new housing, healthcare, and road infrastructure projects are underway to support the island’s growth.
