MTCC: Hoarafushi Airport Shore Protection Project 55% Completed
The Hoarafushi airport saw its inaugural flight operated on 16th November 2020 by the national airline Maldivian.

The USD 12.8 Million airport development project was carried out by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
However, the airport operations have been hindered during bad weather as high winds resulted in the airport's runway being covered with sand.
Last year in May, the airport terminal itself suffered damages due to severe weather and flooding which resulted in a temporary halt of flight operations.
In June 2021 MTCC began the airport's Shore Protection Project which is today 55% completed.
As per MTCC, the breakwater profiling works and the construction of groyne are currently ongoing with 94% and 70% completed respectively.
