Velana International Airport (VIA), the primary gateway to the Maldives, has reached a remarkable milestone in its cargo operations. In under a year, the airport successfully moved 2 million tonnes of cargo, reinforcing its position as a critical hub for international trade and logistics. This achievement highlights VIA’s growing role in global commerce, connecting three countries to 20 destinations through 12 airlines.

The airport’s cargo operations have seen significant enhancements, including the inauguration of a new cargo terminal. This facility, designed to accommodate increasing demand, has tripled the previous cargo handling capacity, allowing for more efficient processing and storage. The terminal now has the capability to service 120,000 tonnes of cargo annually, a substantial increase from the previous 50,000-tonne capacity.
With its expanded infrastructure, VIA has positioned itself as a key player in international cargo movement. The airport’s ability to connect multiple countries and destinations ensures seamless trade and logistics operations, benefiting businesses and consumers alike. The new cargo terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including nine X-ray machines, enhancing security and efficiency.
Looking ahead, the Maldivian government has ambitious plans for VIA’s cargo operations. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has outlined a vision to further increase the airport’s cargo capacity to 300,000 tonnes, aiming to bridge the country’s trade deficit and boost economic growth. This expansion aligns with broader efforts to transform VIA into a world-class aviation hub capable of handling 25 million tourists annually.
Velana International Airport’s latest milestone underscores its growing influence in global trade and logistics. With continued investment in infrastructure and technology, VIA is set to play an even greater role in facilitating international commerce and strengthening the Maldives’ position in the global economy.
