Velana International Airport released statistics of the first month of airport operations since the Maldivian border was reopened.
For international operations:
Total Air Traffic Movements: 399
Passenger arrivals: 7,607
Passenger departures: 9,269
For domestic operations:
Total Air Traffic Movements: 365
Passenger arrivals: 3,480
Passenger departures: 4,323
Since the reopening of the borders, more airlines have recommenced operations to the Maldives, and recently both Emirates and Sri Lankan airlines have increased their flights due to an increase in passenger demand. Although these figures are still extremely low compared to the figures from the same time period of last year.
From the total passenger arrivals, 5,177 were tourist arrivals. The numbers are expected to increase towards the end of the year as more resorts are scheduled to reopen late this year. Better results are expected towards year end to early 2021 and later. Even though the Maldives is reopened the world air travel is far from being back to normal and it is of great difficulty for many to consider travel due to many health and other regulations set forth by countries. Most recently IATA has further delayed expected full recovery by one year to 2024.
