Maldivian authorities have detained a 36‑year‑old American national after security personnel at Velana International Airport discovered a magazine containing live rounds inside his checked luggage. The passenger, identified by police as Cobol Britain Tyler, arrived in the country yesterday and was taken into custody following the routine screening that revealed the prohibited item.

Officials have not yet released details regarding his departure point or the airline he travelled on. The discovery prompted immediate intervention by airport security and police, who secured the ammunition and initiated legal procedures.
Tyler was presented before the court today, where a judge ordered him to be held in remand for 10 days while investigations continue. Police have not indicated whether additional charges may follow.
The Maldives maintains strict prohibitions on the importation of firearms, ammunition, and related components. While private gun ownership is permitted under US law, Maldivian legislation criminalises the possession or transport of such items without explicit authorisation. Authorities emphasise that these regulations apply uniformly to all travellers, regardless of nationality.
