The aircraft was first brought to the Maldives by Hawks Pvt Ltd in August 2025. Now, after months of preparation and regulatory compliance work, the state-of-the-art amphibious light sport aircraft has completed its inaugural flight in Maldivian airspace.

Aircraft Specifications

Manufactured by ICON Aircraft in California, the ICON A5 is a two-seat amphibious aircraft powered by a Rotax 912 iS Sport engine. It features a sleek aerodynamic design with folding wings for easy transport and storage, a panoramic canopy offering exceptional visibility, and an intuitive cockpit layout. With a cruise speed of approximately 85 knots and a range exceeding 420 nautical miles, the A5 is capable of short takeoffs and landings on both runways and open water a capability ideally suited for the Maldives' unique island geography.

Operational Preparations

For the ICON A5 to operate in the Maldives, the aircraft must be registered with the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority (MCAA) and comply with applicable airworthiness standards. For commercial operations such as passenger transport, aerial tours, or resort transfers, an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and more stringent regulatory requirements would be necessary.

Hawks Pvt Ltd, a diversified Maldivian business group with interests in fuel import, hospitality, and aviation, has been positioning the aircraft to support its growing tourism ventures.

To support the amphibious aircraft's operations in the challenging saltwater marine environment, Hawks Pvt Ltd has advertised for a dedicated FAA-licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with Inspection Authorization (IA). The position requires specialized expertise in Rotax engines, composite airframes, and corrosion prevention protocols essential for seaplane operations in tropical conditions. A Maldivian national has also been trained to operate the ICON A5, having traveled to the United States to obtain a type training on the aircraft.

What's Next

With its amphibious capabilities and panoramic visibility, the ICON A5 is ideally positioned to enhance Hawks' tourism offerings through exclusive leisure experiences. The A5 is expected to be utilized for flights such as scenic aerial tours, photography flights, and etc offering visitors a unique way to experience the Maldives' breathtaking atolls from the air. The aircraft's ability to land on both water and runways also provides flexibility for special charters and bespoke guest experiences, complementing Hawks' existing hospitality ventures.
