Malaysia’s AirAsia has finalized a headline‑making purchase agreement for 150 Airbus A220‑300 aircraft, marking the largest single firm order ever placed for the A220 program and pushing total commitments for the type beyond the 1,000‑aircraft milestone. The deal represents a defining moment both for AirAsia’s long‑term fleet strategy and for Airbus’ ambitions in the 100–160‑seat market segment.

The agreement was formally announced at Airbus’ Mirabel facility in Canada, witnessed by Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer of Capital A and Advisor to AirAsia Group, and Lars Wagner, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus. The ceremony was held in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette, underscoring the industrial and political significance of the order.
AirAsia becomes a new operator of the A220 and the launch customer for the aircraft’s new 160‑seat cabin layout, made possible by the addition of an extra over‑wing exit on each side. The higher‑density configuration enhances the aircraft’s low‑cost carrier appeal while preserving the A220’s hallmark cabin comfort.
For AirAsia, the A220 will serve as a strategic complement to its existing Airbus narrow‑body fleet. The aircraft’s range and economics will allow the Group to expand deeper into ASEAN and Central Asia, opening new point‑to‑point markets while enabling larger aircraft to be redeployed on longer‑haul routes. The order also aligns with AirAsia’s ambition to evolve into what Tony Fernandes described as “the world’s first true low‑cost network carrier.”
“We have built AirAsia by making bold decisions at the right moment, not the easiest moment. This order reflects our long‑term discipline and the scale of our ambitions,” Fernandes said. “The A220 unlocks new markets and routes and brings us closer to building the world’s first true low‑cost network carrier. Our partnership with Airbus spans more than two decades and has been central to everything we have achieved. Today is another milestone in that journey, and there are many more to come.”
Airbus’ Lars Wagner highlighted the aircraft’s fit with AirAsia’s evolving network strategy. “The A220 will provide an optimal platform for AirAsia, combining low operating costs with the range that will enable the carrier to open new routes across Asia and beyond. Airbus and AirAsia teams have been working tirelessly to reach this landmark agreement, which is fully aligned with the airline’s new network strategy.”
The A220 family is positioned as the most modern aircraft in its class, offering the longest range, lowest fuel burn, and widest cabin among 100–160‑seat airliners. It can operate flights of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km) and, as of March 2026, 501 A220s had been delivered to 25 operators worldwide.
In line with Airbus’ broader sustainability roadmap, the A220 is already certified to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with the manufacturer targeting 100% SAF capability by 2030 across all its aircraft families.
AirAsia’s order not only reshapes the future of its own network but also reinforces the A220’s growing global footprint. For Airbus, the deal stands as a powerful endorsement of the programme’s maturity and long‑term market relevance. For AirAsia, it marks the beginning of a new chapter one defined by network expansion, fleet modernisation, and renewed ambition on the regional and international stage.
