American Airlines is celebrating a major milestone as the carrier marks the 100th anniversary of its first scheduled flight, a historic journey operated on April 17, 1926, between Chicago and St. Louis.

The inaugural flight, flown under the banner of what would eventually become American Airlines, marked the beginning of a century‑long evolution from a small mail‑carrying operation into one of the world’s largest commercial airlines. The 1926 service was part of the early U.S. airmail network, a system that laid the foundation for modern passenger aviation.

Over the past century, American Airlines has expanded from a handful of aircraft to a global fleet serving hundreds of destinations across multiple continents. The airline’s growth has been shaped by mergers, technological advancements, and the rapid expansion of commercial air travel throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.

The airline said the anniversary reflects not only its operational history but also the broader development of U.S. aviation, from early propeller‑driven aircraft to today’s long‑haul, fuel‑efficient jets.
