China’s Comac C919 Completes First Scheduled International Commercial Flight

China’s home‑grown narrowbody jet, the COMAC C919, has taken a major step onto the global stage, completing its first scheduled international commercial passenger flight and marking a new milestone for the country’s fast‑growing civil aviation sector.

On 12 August 2026, Air China Flight CA723 departed Beijing Capital International Airport at around 3:00 p.m., operating the historic service to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The aircraft landed at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, officially opening the C919’s international route network beyond mainland China.

The C919 entered commercial service in May 2023, gradually building up domestic operations across major Chinese cities. While the aircraft has previously flown cross‑border sectors including services to Hong Kong, this marks its first scheduled international commercial route, a key benchmark for both COMAC and China’s aviation industry.

The Beijing–Ulaanbaatar sector is expected to serve as a proving ground for the type’s international reliability, performance, and passenger experience as Air China evaluates further regional opportunities.

The launch of CA723’s C919 operation underscores China’s push to expand the aircraft’s presence in nearby markets. Mongolia’s close economic and cultural ties with China make Ulaanbaatar a strategic first step, offering a manageable sector length and strong passenger demand.
