The Government of the Maldives has welcomed the United Kingdom’s decision to pause the planned handover of the Chagos Archipelago (Foalhavahi) to Mauritius.

In its statement, the Maldives underscored its legitimate interest in the future status and governance of the archipelago and described the pause as an opportunity to renew negotiations with the United Kingdom. The Government reiterated the need for a fair and equitable outcome that respects the rights of the Maldives, supports regional stability, aligns with international law, and safeguards the long‑term sustainability of the Indian Ocean.
The Chagos Archipelago holds operational relevance due to the presence of Diego Garcia, a major military airfield that supports long‑range missions, surveillance operations, and strategic transit activity across the Indian Ocean.
The area has seen heightened aircraft movements in recent months, including transits linked to the Middle East conflict. Its position along key air corridors means any change in the administrative environment surrounding the archipelago can influence regional airspace.
The Maldives stated that it remains open to continued dialogue as discussions on the future of Foalhavahi progress.
