Flydubai is set to begin a series of cargo flights from Dubai to Malé this Thursday, marking the first time the airline will operate cargo‑in‑cabin services to Velana International Airport. The move comes as supply chains across the Middle East face mounting pressure due to the ongoing regional conflict, prompting airlines and logistics operators to seek alternative methods to maintain cargo flow.

Mohamed Firaq, Managing Director of Ace Aviation Services Maldives, Flydubai’s local agent, confirmed that the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority granted approval for the operation on Sunday. “We appreciate this initiative by Flydubai during these challenging times,” Firaq said, noting that the conflict has disrupted traditional cargo routes and created bottlenecks for goods entering the Maldives.

According to the schedule shared by Ace Aviation, Flydubai will operate these cargo‑in‑cabin flights until 29 April. The service allows freight to be transported on passenger seats and in overhead bins, in addition to the aircraft’s cargo hold, significantly increasing available capacity. The method gained global traction during the Covid‑19 pandemic, when airlines repurposed passenger cabins to move urgent medical supplies and personal protective equipment.

With the Middle East conflict continuing to disrupt airspace and logistics networks, airlines serving the Maldives have been forced to adapt quickly to maintain supply reliability.

The temporary cargo‑in‑cabin operation is anticipated to provide short‑term relief for importers while the broader regional situation remains fluid.
