Island Aviation Services Ltd. (IASL) has officially assumed management of Dharavandhoo Airport, marking a significant shift in domestic aviation operations and paving the way for a major terminal expansion designed to enhance passenger experience and support regional tourism growth.

The handover agreement was signed by Director General of Transport and Civil Aviation Ahmed Shameem and Managing Director General of Dharavandhoo Airport Ahmed Shameem. Managing Director of Island Aviation, Ibrahim Iyas, accepted the airport on behalf of Maldivian, the national airline.
The transfer follows an announcement by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to Dharavandhoo on 13 August 2025, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening aviation infrastructure and aligning airport development with community expectations.
Opened in 2012 under a public‑private partnership, Dharavandhoo Airport has grown into one of the busiest domestic airports in the Maldives.
42,000+ flights handled since opening
1.8 million passengers served
Eight daily flights on average
72% of passengers are international visitors
99 staff employed, supporting local livelihoods
Located in Baa Atoll, home to more than 4,600 tourist beds across 16 resorts and 79 guesthouses, the airport plays a critical role in connecting one of the country’s most active tourism hubs.
As part of the takeover, Island Aviation announced a major terminal development project aimed at improving service standards and operational efficiency. The expansion will double the terminal size from 959 sq ft to 1,874 sq ft, easing congestion and improving passenger flow.
According to Island Aviation, the upgraded terminal will:
Expand the check‑in area
Reduce the number of self‑check‑in kiosks for smoother processing
Improve baggage handling, supported by a newly installed conveyor belt
Enhance arrival and departure areas for better passenger comfort
Introduce an outdoor waiting area
Feature architecture inspired by the beauty of the underwater environment
The company stated that the redesign will create a more efficient and welcoming space, particularly important for an airport serving a high volume of international resort guests.
With Island Aviation now overseeing operations and airline services at Dharavandhoo Airport, the government expects improved service quality, stronger connectivity, and enhanced support for tourism growth in Baa Atoll.
The combined impact of the management transfer and terminal expansion is positioned to elevate the airport’s role as a key gateway for both residents and visitors, reinforcing its importance in the Maldives’ domestic aviation network.
