The Maldives and Australia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish and facilitate commercial air services between the two countries, marking a significant step forward in expanding long‑haul connectivity for the Maldives. The agreement creates a formal framework that allows airlines from both nations to operate direct flights, subject to regulatory approvals and commercial arrangements.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Maldives by Mr. Abdul Haris, Chairman of the Board of the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, and on behalf of the Australian Government by Mr. Jim Wolfe, Assistant Secretary for International Aviation at the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts. Officials noted that the agreement reflects the longstanding and friendly relations between the two countries and demonstrates a shared commitment to strengthening aviation cooperation.
The new framework is expected to support tourism, business travel, and broader economic ties by enabling more efficient travel between the Indian Ocean and Australia. Until now, passengers travelling between the two countries have relied on connections through Southeast Asia or the Middle East, often resulting in long transit times.
The signing of the MoU also aligns with Maldivian’s plans to launch direct flights between Male’ and Melbourne, which would become the first nonstop air link between the Maldives and Australia. The national airline has previously announced a seasonal weekly service in partnership with Luxury Escapes, with operations targeted to begin in May 2026, pending final regulatory clearances from Australian authorities.
The proposed route is expected to offer Australian travellers a more convenient option for reaching the Maldives, while also supporting the tourism sector by improving access to resorts and island destinations. Maldivian intends to coordinate the schedule to allow smooth onward connections to domestic flights and seaplane services.
The MoU now provides the regulatory foundation needed for these plans to move forward, positioning both countries to benefit from enhanced connectivity and new opportunities in travel and tourism.
