Two private jet operations departing from Male’ were forced to return to Velana International Airport (VIA) today after widespread Middle East airspace closures disrupted their planned routes toward Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. The disruptions follow escalating regional tensions triggered by Israeli strikes, which led several Gulf states to suspend flights and restrict airspace.

A VistaJet private jet operating a charter service from Male’ to Košice, Slovakia, initiated a return shortly after departure when its planned routing through the Gulf region became unavailable. With UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain imposing immediate airspace restrictions in response to the regional security situation, the aircraft was unable to continue toward the Middle East corridor that forms the primary transit path for flights from South Asia to Europe.
A Qatar Executive private jet operating from Male’ to Larnaca, Cyprus similarly reversed course and returned to VIA. The aircraft’s routing required transit through Gulf FIRs that were closed or restricted due to the unfolding regional crisis.
The returns come amid a broader wave of aviation disruption across the Middle East. According to regional reporting, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain have suspended flights and enacted precautionary airspace closures following explosions reported in Tehran and confirmation of Israeli military operations targeting Iran. These simultaneous closures have created a major operational bottleneck, affecting commercial airlines, cargo operators, and private jet movements across the region.
