Malaysia Airlines Pilot Detained in Jakarta With 26kg of Drugs, Allegedly Operating Flight Under Influence

A Malaysia Airlines 737 pilot has been arrested at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after authorities uncovered more than 26 kilograms (57 pounds) of ecstasy and a package of methamphetamine in his luggage, Indonesian police confirmed.

Customs officers detected a suspicious suitcase during X‑ray screening late Tuesday at the international arrivals terminal. The luggage was later claimed by the suspect, identified as a Malaysia Airlines pilot operating flight MH727 from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta, according to Eko Hadi Santoso, director of narcotics crimes at Indonesia’s National Police Criminal Investigation Agency.

Police said the suitcase contained 14 large packages of ecstasy over 70,000 pills totaling 26kg, along with a separate package of methamphetamine. The pilot was immediately detained and named a suspect. Santoso said investigators are now working to identify the network behind him and determine whether the pilot was acting on instructions from an international syndicate.

During questioning, the pilot allegedly admitted he had been instructed to deliver the drugs in exchange for 50,000 Malaysian ringgit and had previously transported narcotics on two other occasions, once to Sabah and once to Jakarta. A drug test returned positive results for methamphetamine, ecstasy, and cocaine, indicating he had been under the influence while operating the flight.

Malaysia Airlines said it is cooperating fully with Indonesian authorities and has launched an internal review, reiterating its zero‑tolerance policy toward misconduct.
