Airbus Considers Stretched A350‑2000 Variant as Emirates Signals Long‑Term Interest

Airbus is considering a stretched version of the A350 after Boeing indicated it was prepared to develop a larger 777X, with Emirates now saying it would look at the proposed Airbus variant if it is launched.

In November, Airbus executives said the manufacturer was looking at a possible stretch of the A350 following Boeing’s move to discuss a higher‑capacity 777X as part of a major order campaign. At the time, Airbus framed the idea as part of its long‑term product planning, with no programme launch, specifications, or timeline announced.

Speaking this week, Emirates President Tim Clark told Reuters the airline would consider ordering a stretched A350 if Airbus decides to proceed with the aircraft. Clark’s comments reflect Emirates’ long‑standing interest in high‑capacity twin‑engine wide‑bodies for dense long‑haul routes, but he made clear that any decision depends on Airbus formally defining and launching the variant.

The potential aircraft, sometimes informally referred to in industry discussions as a stretched A350 beyond the A350‑1000, remains only a concept. Airbus has not confirmed any design details, performance targets, or entry‑into‑service dates, and the model is not part of the current A350 family.

For now, Airbus continues to focus on the A350‑900, A350‑1000 and A350F, while keeping the option of a larger A350 on the table. Emirates, already an A350‑900 customer, is watching developments but cannot make commitments until Airbus turns the concept into a defined programme.
