Velana International Airport (VIA) is progressing toward the completion of Phase 2 of the Taxiway Charlie (Taxiway C) reconstruction, following a final inspection carried out by the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority in coordination with airport departments.

Taxiway Charlie occupies the alignment of VIA’s former runway, which was later converted into a taxiway and is now undergoing a rebuild. Phase 2 covers a 548‑metre section, with reconstruction works conducted between 18 August 2025 and 8 January 2026. The inspection confirms that this segment is now in its concluding stages before commissioning.

Phase 1 of the 3,200‑metre redevelopment was completed in August 2025. The overall project, which began on 10 April 2025, is intended to enhance airside operations through improved safety, efficiency, and aircraft movement capacity.

During the reconstruction period, certain taxiway closures have contributed to increased ground congestion and operational constraints. These temporary impacts are expected to ease once the full Taxiway Charlie rebuild is completed, providing smoother aircraft flow and more efficient airside operations for all.

Work on the remaining sections of Taxiway Charlie will continue as part of Velana International Airport’s broader airside infrastructure development programme.
