Agreement has been signed with the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) to develop a new Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) building at Gan International Airport.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment post on X, the new facility will strengthen the Maldives’ capacity to monitor weather patterns, improve forecasting accuracy, and enhance the delivery of timely alerts to communities across the country.

WAMCO’s involvement in the project highlights the government’s continued reliance on state‑owned enterprises for infrastructure development, a practice that has drawn mixed reactions regarding efficiency and project delivery standards.

The new MMS building at Gan is intended to offer improved working space for forecasters and technical staff, though its effectiveness will ultimately depend on how well the facility supports operational demands related to aviation, marine services, and public‑safety requirements in the southern region.
