Maldivian’s Emergency Air Ambulance Service has reported completing 1,562 flights and transporting 1,800 patients since its launch, reflecting the growing role of the program in providing urgent medical care across the island nation.

Established as a key initiative under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, the air ambulance program was designed to enhance emergency medical care accessibility throughout the Maldives. Operated in collaboration between Maldivian Airlines, the Ministry of Health, and the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), the service has become a cornerstone of the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
At the heart of the operation is a DHC Dash 8‑200 series aircraft, specially configured to deliver swift and safe critical care. The aircraft is equipped to handle emergency medical transfers, ensuring patients receive immediate attention while being transported to facilities capable of advanced treatment.
The service functions 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing rapid response to emergencies across the country. By integrating aviation resources with medical expertise, the initiative demonstrates how strategic collaboration can overcome logistical challenges unique to the Maldives.
As the service enters its third year, the government and its partners reaffirm their commitment to expanding capacity and maintaining readiness, ensuring that every patient in need can rely on swift, safe, and professional emergency care. Maldivian also recently announced the expansion of its air ambulance services to Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, further strengthening regional medical connectivity.
