The Parliament of the Maldives has incurred MVR 1.4 million in expenses for VIP services at Velana International Airport between 28 May 2024 and 31 July 2025, according to information disclosed through a Right to Information (RTI) request submitted by a member of the public.

The expenditure reflects the use of VIP lounge privileges by Members of Parliament (MPs), their families, and associated individuals, as permitted under current parliamentary budget provisions.

A total of 76 individuals accessed VIP services during the reporting period, with costs covered by the Parliament’s operating budget. Under existing policy, MPs and their immediate family members are eligible to utilize VIP lounge facilities at Velana International Airport, including access to private seating areas, expedited handling, and premium hospitality services.

Among the most frequent users was Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim, who reportedly accessed the VIP lounge 133 times during the 14 month period. Records show that MVR 116,099 was spent on his individual usage alone, primarily for VIP lunch services provided at the airport.

Velana International Airport, operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), maintains a dedicated VIP terminal for state officials, diplomats, and premium travelers. The facility is equipped to handle high level delegations and offers tailored services that exceed standard passenger amenities.
