Korean Air has announced a $50 billion order for 103 Boeing aircraft, the airline’s largest-ever fleet investment and the most significant widebody order from an Asian carrier in Boeing’s history. The announcement coincides with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s official visit to Washington, highlighting the deepening industrial and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The order comprises a mix of widebody and narrowbody aircraft, including:

  • 20 Boeing 777-9s

  • 25 Boeing 787-10s

  • 50 Boeing 737-10s

  • 8 Boeing 777-8 Freighters

This diverse acquisition reflects Korean Air’s dual focus on expanding long-haul passenger capacity and enhancing cargo operations. Notably, the deal marks the airline’s first commitment to the 777-8F, Boeing’s next-generation freighter.

Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air, emphasized the strategic importance of the order:

“Acquiring these next-generation aircraft is the core of our fleet modernization strategy, delivering significant gains in fuel efficiency and enhancing the passenger experience across our global network. This investment is also a critical enabler for our future as a merged airline with Asiana, to ensure that our combined carrier is one of the most competitive airlines in the industry.”

Once finalized, the order is expected to support approximately 135,000 jobs across the United States, spanning Boeing’s manufacturing, supply chain, and engineering operations.

The timing of the announcement, aligned with President Lee’s visit adds a layer of geopolitical significance, reinforcing bilateral cooperation in aerospace, trade, and technology.

The fleet renewal is a critical component of Korean Air’s integration with Asiana Airlines, a merger that will consolidate two of South Korea’s largest carriers into a unified, globally competitive airline. The new aircraft will replace aging models, reduce carbon emissions, and expand the airline’s reach across North America, Europe, and emerging markets.
