A Maldivian man who was arrested for allegedly engaging in unruly behaviour onboard a Batik Air flight has been released from police custody on health grounds, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

A police spokesperson said the passenger was released on Friday morning due to health-related concerns. No details were provided regarding his condition, but police stated that the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

The man, who was travelling on a diplomatic passport, was taken into custody earlier this week after reportedly causing repeated disturbances during the flight to Male’. According to information shared with Aviators Maldives, he was allegedly intoxicated, shouting at cabin crew, and disturbing passengers seated near him throughout the journey.

The behaviour reportedly escalated to the point where the airline requested law enforcement officers to be present when the aircraft arrived at Velana International Airport. Police boarded the aircraft upon arrival and escorted the passenger off the flight. Witnesses said he continued shouting at officers from the aircraft door through the terminal, including the immigration area and towards baggage claim.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the extent of the disturbance or whether any passengers or crew members were harmed.

The case comes amid increasing global concern over disruptive passenger behaviour, which airlines say places additional strain on cabin crews and can interfere with inflight safety procedures.
