The redevelopment of Hanimaadhoo International Airport is nearing completion. According to Minister Abdulla Muththalib, the project is now reportedly 88.7% complete. In a recent update shared on social media, the Minister reaffirmed that the airport will be ready by September 2025, keeping the project on schedule.

The development includes a 2400m runway capable of accommodating Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft, marking a significant upgrade from its previous capacity. This enhancement will enable Hanimaadhoo to handle direct international flights, reducing dependency on Velana International Airport for northern travelers and significantly boosting regional connectivity.
Major structural elements of the project have already been completed. The new runway is fully built and ready for operations. Meanwhile, the passenger terminal which will be capable of handling up to 1.3 million passengers annually is approximately 83% complete.
Additional infrastructure, including the air traffic control tower, aircraft hangar, and cargo terminal, has reached 96% completion. A 42,000-square-metre apron, essential for parking and maneuvering aircraft, was finished in February 2025.
This ambitious project is being financed under a $136.6 million loan agreement with India’s EXIM Bank.
