Velana International Airport (VIA) has long been the key hub for international travel to the Maldives, handling a growing number of flights from major airlines. With the airport's new international terminal to open, there is potential for Airbus A380 operations at VIA.

New International Terminal
Velana International Airport is preparing to open its new international terminal, a major upgrade designed to accommodate the growing number of travelers visiting the Maldives. Scheduled to open next month in July 2025, the terminal spans 78,000 square meters and will significantly increase the airport's capacity to handle over seven million passengers per year.
One of the most notable features is the introduction of aerobridges, a first for the Maldives, allowing passengers to board aircraft directly from the terminal rather than using shuttle buses. The terminal will also include modern immigration counters, an updated baggage system, and new lounges, enhancing the overall passenger experience.
The Airbus A380: A Giant of the Skies
Measuring 73 meters in length with a wingspan of nearly 80 meters, this Airbus A380 is the largest passenger aircraft ever built. The A380's full length double deck allows airlines to configure cabins with luxury suites, lounges, and even showers, making it a favorite for premium travelers.
The aircraft can carry up to 853 passengers in an all-economy layout, though most airlines opt for a three-class configuration with around 525 seats. It is powered by four turbofan engines, either the Engine Alliance GP7200 or Rolls-Royce Trent 900, providing a maximum takeoff weight of 1,268,000 pounds (575,155 kg). Despite its size, the A380 is known for its quiet operation, thanks to advanced noise reducing technology.
The A380s production ended in 2021 due to shifting airline preferences toward smaller, more fuel-efficient aircraft. Despite this, the A380 continues to operate on major international routes, particularly with airlines like Emirates, British Airways, and Singapore Airlines.
Can VIA Handle the A380?
Velana International Airport has previously accommodated the Airbus A380 once, notably when Etihad Airways operated a special flight for the inauguration of the airport's Code F runway. The runway, measuring 3,400 meters, was specifically designed to handle large aircraft, including the A380.

The apron has been significantly upgraded to support large aircraft like the Airbus A380 operations during the airport upgrades. The upgraded apron provides the necessary space, pavement strength, and access for safe ground handling, parking, and servicing of the world’s largest passenger aircraft.
However, regular operations would require sufficient gate infrastructure, ground handling capacity, and passenger facilities to support the aircraft's high volume.
Emirates: A Likely Operator?
Emirates currently operates multiple Boeing flights to VIA daily utilizing the Boeing 777, with two flights scheduled closely in the morning and afternoon. Given the airline's extensive A380 fleet, consolidating these flights into a single A380 operation could be a logical move.
Emirates has historically used the A380 for high-demand routes, and with the Maldives being a popular luxury destination, the aircraft's premium seating and spacious cabins could enhance passenger experience.
With the launch of VIA's new terminal, it could pave the way for A380 operations in the near future. If Emirates or another airline decides to introduce the aircraft, it would mark a significant milestone for Maldivian aviation, reinforcing VIA's capability to handle large-scale international travel.
