After 33 Years A New Runway Operation Begins In Hanimaadhoo International Airport

Hanimaadhoo International Airport’s has begun operations of the partially opened new runway.

Construction is currently underway at Hanimaadhoo International Airport under which a new 2,400m runway will be built along with a new passenger terminal, cargo terminal, fuel farm, and fire fighting facility.

A 1,200m section of the new runway has been opened to allow for the continued operation of the airport. The old runway will be discontinued after 33 years of usage as one of the oldest airports in the Maldives.

The new runway will allow for narrow-body jet operations like the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. On completion, the Airport would have the capacity to handle 1.3 million passengers annually.
