The Hanimaadhoo International Airport’s development project will see the construction of a passenger terminal, cargo terminal, fuel farm, and fire fighting facility costing USD 136 million.
The new runway will be 2,400m long allowing narrow-body jet operations like the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. A significant portion of the runway is already nearing completion.
According to a statement by Regional Airports Company Limited; a part of the new runway will be opened within a month to allow for flight operation as the existing runway and the apron will be entirely removed.
Opening the 1,200m part of the runway would allow for current domestic operations to continue. As of now, the airport is partially open during certain periods of the day.
The entire project will be completed by 2024. Upon completion, the Airport can handle 1.3 million passengers annually and will be able to cater to narrow-body jets like the Airbus 320 and the Boeing 737.
