Universal Hydrogen Completes First Flight On Hydrogen-Powered Dash-8

Universal Hydrogen yesterday completed the first flight on the Dash8 fitted with a megawatt-class hydrogen fuel cell powertrain in one of the nacelles.

The Dash8 nicknamed Lightning McClean flew for 15 minutes, reaching an altitude of 3,500 MSL conducted under an experimental airworthiness certificate issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) earlier in February.

“The airplane handled beautifully, and the noise and vibrations from the fuel cell powertrain are significantly lower than from the conventional turbine engine.” Alex Kroll, Test Pilot.

Universal Hydrogen aims to provide a conversion kit for both Dash8 and ATR 72 to fly on hydrogen and currently has an order for 247 aircraft conversions from 16 customers.
