Maldivian to Add Two Airbus A220-300 Aircraft in Fleet Modernization Push

The national airline of the Maldives is bringing two Airbus A220-300 aircraft into its fleet, marking a strategic shift toward modern, fuel-efficient narrowbody operations.

Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL), which operates Maldivian, has issued a request for proposals to lease up to two A220-300s on an operating lease basis, with deliveries targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027 and the first quarter of 2028 . The aircraft will be based at Velana International Airport and leased for periods of six to 12 years .
The A220-300 represents a significant upgrade for Maldivian’s narrowbody capabilities. The airline has historically relied on the Airbus A320 for its international routes, operating the type on services to destinations including Dhaka and India . The decision to add the A220-300 reflects a broader fleet modernization strategy aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger experience .
According to the tender specifications, the aircraft will feature a two-class configuration with a preferred layout of eight business-class and 130 economy-class seats . They must be delivered in Maldivian’s livery and remain free of major maintenance events for 24 months, 5,000 flight hours, or 3,000 flight cycles following delivery .
The A220-300’s range of approximately 3,400 nautical miles positions it well for Maldivian’s regional network. The airline currently operates scheduled international services to seven destinations across four countries, including Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in India, Dhaka in Bangladesh, three destinations in China, and Melbourne in Australia . The new aircraft could support frequency increases on existing routes or open new medium-haul destinations.
This move comes as Maldivian continues its broader fleet expansion. The carrier introduced its first wide-body Airbus A330-200 in January 2025 and is working to bring a second wide-body aircraft into service later this year, with plans to launch flights to Russia and South Korea once that aircraft arrives.
Interested parties must submit proposals by 28 October 2026 at 23:59 hrs Maldives Time. Clarification requests are due by 15 October, with responses to be issued by 19 October . IASL plans to notify shortlisted bidders by 5 November .
