Maldives and Philippines Agree on Expanded Air Traffic Rights

The Maldives and the Philippines concluded bilateral air services consultations on Friday, reaching an understanding to expand air traffic rights and commercial opportunities for airlines of both countries, in a move expected to pave the way for enhanced connectivity and closer aviation cooperation.

The consultations were held to review and update the draft Air Services Agreement (ASA), which was initially agreed upon in April 2018.

According to a joint outcome of the talks, both sides reached an understanding to broaden air traffic rights and commercial opportunities, laying the groundwork for expanded route options and stronger aviation ties between the two archipelagic nations.

The Philippine delegation was led by Mr. Carmelo Arcilla, Executive Director of the Philippine Civil Aeronautics Board, while the Maldivian delegation was led by Hussain Jaleel, Chief Executive of the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority.

The two sides reviewed the draft ASA first agreed in April 2018, with the aim of updating its provisions to reflect current market conditions and the growing demand for air travel between the two countries.

The expanded air traffic rights are expected to allow designated carriers from both countries greater flexibility in operating routes, frequencies and capacity, while opening up additional commercial opportunities.

The move is expected to support tourism, trade and people-to-people links between the Maldives and the Philippines, both major tourism destinations in Asia.
