Thailand’s overhaul of its visa‑exemption system is reshaping regional travel, and the Maldives is among the countries most affected. Under the new “one country, one privilege” model, most nationalities will now receive 30 days of visa‑free entry but the Maldives has been placed in a 15 day exemption category, the shortest available.

The change follows the cancellation of Thailand’s previous 60‑day visa‑free scheme, which had boosted long stay tourism and attracted travellers seeking extended holidays or remote work stays. With the new rules, Thailand is tightening entry conditions to address overstays, illegal work, and security concerns, while shifting its focus toward “quality tourists.”
Maldivian travellers specially those visiting Thailand for medical care, shopping, or short leisure trips will now face stricter limits. A 15‑day stay may require more planning or additional visa applications, increasing travel costs and reducing flexibility.
Travellers already in Thailand under the old rules can remain until their permitted stay expires. Once the new system takes effect, Maldivians will need to follow the updated 15 day exemption or apply through Thailand’s e‑Visa platform.
