History is made today as Maldivian operates the first direct commercial flight between Australia and the Maldives, establishing a new long‑haul connection between the two countries and marking a significant milestone for the national carrier.

The inaugural service departed Melbourne Tullamarine early this morning aboard Maldivian’s Airbus A330, following the aircraft’s arrival the previous day on a special positioning flight. The operation introduces the first nonstop link between Melbourne and Malé, removing the need for passengers to transit through Southeast Asian or Middle Eastern hubs and reducing total travel time to around eleven hours.
The route is being launched in partnership with Luxury Escapes, the Australian travel company coordinating and marketing the direct services. Through this collaboration, Maldivian is operating dedicated flights for Luxury Escapes customers, reflecting strong demand from the Australian leisure market and expanding the Maldives’ visibility as a premium long‑haul destination.
The A330 completed the Indian Ocean crossing smoothly and arrived in Malé to a formal welcome from airport officials and media. Its performance on the inaugural service reinforces Maldivian’s readiness to operate sustained intercontinental flights as part of its expanding international strategy.
The new service is expected to strengthen tourism flows, improve travel convenience for passengers, and broaden Maldivian’s global footprint. It also provides Maldivian nationals living or studying in Australia with the first direct air link home, a development welcomed by the community.
